APD Officer Running Marathons for Champions-4-ChildrenOn Sunday, February 17, 2013, Senior Police Officer Matt Harmatuk will be running the Austin Marathon as part of Cheyanna’s Champions-4-Children. Matt has been selected as an Ambassador of the program to benefit children suffering from rare, acute, or undiagnosed conditions by teaming the children with champion athletes to inspire them to their recovery finish line. Matt joins an all-star team of eight Austin athletes including pro triathlete and Marathon winner Desiree Ficker, Founder Talaya Frazier and David Garza who was voted best spin instructor in Austin. The completion of the Austin Marathon symbolizes the start of training together for the Boston Marathon.The children, Matt and the other Ambassadors will come together at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at the Palmer Events Center to pick up their race packets. Additionally, the marathoners and children will be introduced and then enjoy lunch together after the race on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013.“If giving a child my medal will help them believe that their finish line is coming, I will do whatever it takes to cross that line and bring home that medal,” Matt stated. In addition to participating in the Austin Marathon, Matt has been invited as an Ambassador in the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, a lifelong dream for Matt. The marathoners will present their Boston Marathon medal to their teammate (child) after that race.Champions-4-Children is a new charity in Austin that supports children suffering from rare, acute, or undiagnosed conditions by teaming them with champion athletes to inspire them to their recovery finish line.
